Heatwave claims hundreds of lives

As temperatures return to levels that are expected for this time of year, details on the impact of the recent heatwave are emerging.

The Office for National Statistics have revealed that the recent scorching weather could be responsible for hundreds of deaths in England and Wales.

During the hottest fortnight, between June 25th and July 9th, 663 more deaths were recorded than the average for the same period over the last five years.

Older citizens are particularly vulnerable to heatstroke and dehydration, which can lead to organ failure.
